to “blame” sounds like
to thrust
as though I may take
your stony reasons
and lob them at you –
a trebuchet
for evidence

but

“I do not blame you”
sounds like
understanding
as though I may
paint those words
on rocks myself
and load them
in your slingshot
or run
along the paths
of your projectiles
painting
red and white rings
wherever they landed
and praising
your accuracy –
“What aim!”

Fault
sounds like
cracks
of instability
that have always
threatened
disaster
but foolish humans
built there anyway

and Cause
sounds like
something
we would work for

so this is where
language fails us
where idioms
abandon us
where connotations
cannot convey
and relationship
suffers
because of it
